Even though there are more than 2,000 stone arches in Arches National Park, the Delicate Arch is one of the most well-known geological features in the world and a representation of the state of Utah. As its name suggests, the arch appears to defy gravity with its height and form. It is the largest free-standing arch in the park, with an aperture measuring 46 feet high by 32 feet wide.

Throughout its history, it has gone by an assortment of names, from the whimsical “Cowboy’s Chaps” to the somber “Old Maid’s Bloomers” (“Salt Wash Arch”). The word “delicate” was first used in an article published in January 1934 concerning the Scientific Expedition to the Arches National Monument. The article called the arch “the most delicately chiseled arch in the entire area.”

Guided Tour Of Delicate Arch Trail

The trail begins with a climb across rolling hills and ends with a difficult ascent on an exposed slickrock slope. Throughout the initial portion of the trip, watch for collared lizards, as they can sprint on their hind feet in pursuit of prey. (Don’t worry—you won’t be pursued.) Park rangers advise against trekking this trail during midday in the summer since it can get very hot. 

The trail flattens out after the slickrock ascent. Huge sandstone domes can be seen in this stretch, and the trail is marked with cairns along the way. 

Frame Arch (sometimes called Twisted Doughnut Arch) is visible as you approach Delicate Arch on the right. As implied by its name, this arch creates an ideal “frame” for a photo of Delicate Arch, but exercise caution when ascending to it. A little further on, the trail follows a ledge that hugs a 200-yard stretch of granite wall; be cautious if you’re bringing your children here.

This climb is a classic, and you’ll realize why when you eventually round the curve and view Delicate Arch in its entirety. You are welcome to approach the arch and stand beneath it for your photo, but kindly step aside to make room for other photographers when you’re through. 

Although most hikers can cover the distance, many are surprised by how difficult it is. For this trip, ensure each person has at least two quarts of water.

It’s worthwhile to add a quarter mile to your journey on the way back to visit Wolfe Ranch and view a wall of Ute Indian petroglyphs just before you get back to the trailhead.

What To Expect on Your Hike

There are restrooms available at the Delicate Arch Trailhead parking area at Wolfe Ranch all year long. However, bring your own drinking water, as there isn’t any accessible here. 

This is no easy hike, with a substantial climb up a steep slickrock slope. Anyone hiking this trail should be ready for the heat as there is no shade, and it may get rather hot during the summer.

There is an exquisite environment at Arches National Park. This harsh, arid desert is home to resilient species and vegetation. Despite their seemingly insignificant appearance, a lot of dirt places are essential to the ecosystem’s ability to get water. If trodden upon, this crust of biological soil (also known as cryptobiotic soil) will sustain damage. To contribute to the preservation of the park, kindly observe where you go and stay on designated trails.

If hiking isn’t your thing, there are two more ways to see it: You can obtain a good view of the arch from a mile away by walking just 100 yards across level ground to the Lower Delicate Arch Viewpoint, which is located just down the road. The Upper Viewpoint is a little less obstructed, although it requires a half-mile hike with some stairs. 

The Delicate Arch Trail is the only way for you to get a close-up view of its formation because the arch’s opening is hidden from view from the road.

How To Find The Delicate Arch Trailhead

Proceed north on the main road into the park for 11.7 miles until you reach the right-hand turn leading to Delicate Arch and Wolfe Ranch. After 1.2 miles, turn right onto Delicate Arch Road and go to the parking lot on your left (north). There’s also a parking lot for large cars to your right.

If you’re not interested in hiking, you can access the viewpoints separately. After passing the Delicate Arch Trailhead, proceed 1.2 miles further on Delicate Arch Road. The parking lot of the Lower and Upper Delicate Arch viewing locations marks the end of the road.

What Time is The Busiest?

Visits to Delicate Arch are most popular around sunrise and sunset. Hundreds of photographers can flock to the arch at dusk during the busy summer months to catch the warm light that gives it a flaming red glow. With the sun rising behind the arch, sunrise presents a different yet equally stunning view.

Take advantage of the Frame, also known as Twisted Doughnut Arch, a tiny gap in the rock wall that beautifully frames Delicate Arch for photographers. It’s a terrific photo opportunity just off the trail. Upon reaching it, you will discover that the arch is situated atop a sizable bowl. Make the most of the arch’s varied perspectives from different locations throughout the basin. Walk to the far end to get a special viewpoint and fantastic photos.

Flying A Drone (Is It Allowed?)

Launching, landing, or operating unmanned aircraft (such as drones, quadcopters, or model airplanes) is prohibited in Delicate Arch Trail at Arches National Park. The National Park Service (NPS) imposes restrictions on drone usage to protect wildlife, preserve natural quiet, and ensure visitor safety.

The Fiery Furnace is one of Arches National Park’s most interesting and unique attractions. This sandstone maze can be hard to find, so hikers with an adventurous mindset (and maybe a GPS) will need to identify and follow the pathway. 

This track is also available for hiking as part of a ranger-led trip. We recommend participating in one of these trips before exploring this area on your own. If you can’t wait to travel there by yourself, you’ll need to apply for a permit at the Parks Office. 

The Fiery Furnace is a pleasant climb on a hot day since, despite its name, it is shaded. 

Sand Dune Arch Trail

The Sand Dune Arch is surrounded by a substantial amount of sand, as its name implies, as a result of wind-driven sand deposition at its base. The arch is shaded for much of the day by two large sandstone fins on either side. In the summer heat, try taking off your shoes and enjoying the cool sand between your tired toes. 

Broken Arch Trail

This arch is popular even if it’s not exactly as broken as its name would suggest. Its wrinkly dome gives the impression that it is broken apart and disconnected.

The trail travels west toward the Devil’s Garden Campground, passing directly beyond the Broken Arch bridge. A few short trails go north toward the lesser-known Tapestry Arch, about halfway between Broken Arch and the campground.
